Attacks, Always Attacks


John 8:31-59

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:31-32

This section opens with Jesus turning to address those among the crowd who have believed in Him.  In speaking to them, Jesus issues a new challenge: discipleship.  To become His disciple, they must “hold to my teachings.”  The meaning of the original text is more like the rendering of the NASV: “continue in my word.”  This is much more than being a good Bible student, for John introduced Jesus as the Living Word (1:14) so that to “continue in my word” would require that they have a relationship with Him.
