What do you say when you have no idea of what to say? There are those times when words even when spoken to bring comfort can cause more pain. Your words were kind and compassionate but they still hurt, not because of you, or because the person you are speaking to is too sensitive. It is just that what they are going through is so painful words are useless. Sometimes silence brings more comfort than words. Silent tears, and quiet hugs without a spoken word can at times bring more comfort than all the perfectly spoken words. Your presence can be all they need. Quietly handing them a tissue, or just a glass of water or even a sandwich without being asked can let them know you are there for them. Those are the times I give a hug and honestly tell people that I have no words…just a hug and a pair of ears if they need someone to listen to them.
